ACTA 100T (1) Framework for Activity Assistant Role (Ends Dec 2024)

An overview of the roles and responsibilities of an Activity Assistant, building on previous knowledge. Developing additional understanding about activity, and how activity influences and is influenced by health, age, interests, values, and environment. (11:0:0 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program.

ACTA 100T (1) Framework for Activity Assistant Role (Effective Jan 2025)

An introduction to the roles and responsibilities of an Activity Assistant. Topics include influences on individuals' health and how these influences can impact engagement in meaningful recreation experiences. (11:0:0 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program.

ACTA 101T (1) Activity for Well-Being (Ends Dec 2024)

An exploration of the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to function well as an Activity Assistant as part of a team fostering optimum health. Emphasizes a client-centred approach; effective communication skills; and planning and implementing activities that promote client well-being, both individually and in groups. (6:0:0 for 5 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to program; ACTA 100T

ACTA 101T (1) Enhancing Quality of Life Through Recreation Programming (Effective Jan 2025)

This course focuses on the process of programming. Topics include data collection, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation. Also included is an exploration into various leadership styles and group dynamics with emphasis on how to lead effective programs. (6:0:0 for 5 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to program; ACTA 100T.

ACTA 102T (1) Programming Ideas for Clients With Cognitive Impairments (Ends Dec 2024)

A focused examination of cognitive impairment, including various types of dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia). Investigation and examination of effective principles and strategies for activity involvement with clients with cognitive impairment, including foundational assessment of functional ability. (6:0:0 for 5 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; ACTA 100T and ACTA 101T.

ACTA 102T (1) Overview of the Older Adult (Effective Jan 2025)

A continuation of previous concepts while further highlighting the lifestyles of the older adult. Additional areas of focus include cognitive impairments, chronic conditions, responsive behaviours, and implementing appropriate modifications and adaptations when programming. Concepts around death and dying will also be explored. (6:0:0 for 5 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; ACTA 100T and ACTA 101T.

ACTA 103T (1) Practicum (Ends Dec 2024)

An opportunity to integrate and apply theory and skills of activity assisting in working with clients in practice settings. (0:1:0 -90 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; ACTA 100T, ACTA 101T, ACTA 102T and ACTA 104T.

ACTA 103T (1) Practicum I (Effective Jan 2025)

An opportunity to observe the role of an Activity Assistant in a variety of settings while also applying knowledge and skills gained from the classroom. Emphasis is on how meaningful programs enhance the overall well-being of the clients served. (0:1:0 -40 for 3 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; ACTA 100T.

ACTA 104T (0.5) Observational Practicum (Ends Dec 2024)

An opportunity for students to observe the work and duties of the Activity Assistant and to gain an understanding of and appreciation for this role and the settings in which the Activity Assistant works. Also provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the multidisciplinary team. (0:0:0 -40 for 5 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; ACTA 100T.

Co-requisites: ACTA 101T and ACTA 102T.

ACTA 104T (3) Practicum II (Effective Jan 2025)

An opportunity to integrate theory and foundational knowledge into practice in a care facility through participating and leading recreation programs in a supported environment, while promoting the philosophy of recreation for elders and others in care. (0:0:0 -90 for 5 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; ACTA 100T, ACTA 101T, ACTA 102T, and ACTA 103T.
