GCIB 501 (3) Foundations of Management and Strategy

An examination, using case analysis, of the nature of management, internal and external corporate environments, and the development of corporate strategy. Topics include the role of the global manager, the integrated nature of managing, assessment of the environment using various frameworks and analytical techniques, strategic options and their implications. Credit will only be granted for one of PMBA 501 or GCIB 501. (3:0:0)

GCIB 502 (2) Foundations of Marketing

A broad theoretical and practical introduction to marketing and the application of theory and effective practice. Topics include the marketing function and mix, buyer behaviour, market research and strategy, customer management and building and maintaining successful relationships with customers and suppliers. Credit will only be granted for one of PMBA 502 or GCIB 502. (4:0:0 for 7 weeks)

GCIB 503 (2) Business Economics

A thorough exposé of the relevance of economics in decision-making by economic agents and its contribution to pillars of business such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Strategic Management. Credit will only be granted for one of PMBA 503 or GCIB 503. (4:0:0 for 7 weeks)

GCIB 504 (2) Foundations of Financial Accounting

An introduction to accounting information in business decision-making from the user perspective. Topics include the key financial statements, critical elements of the statements, the accounting cycle, and analysis of financial results. Credit will only be granted for one of PMBA 504 or GCIB 504. (4:0:0 for 7 weeks)

GCIB 505 (2) Foundations of Mathematics and Statistics for Business

An introduction and review of critical mathematical and statistical techniques used in business decision-making. Topics include algebra, linear systems, time value of money, and simple calculus, plus the descriptive statistics, mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics including regression analysis necessary to analyze and draw conclusions about business data. (4:0:0 for 4 weeks)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Business.

GCIB 506 (2) Academic Integrity and University Culture

A cultural orientation to Canadian university life. Topics include teamwork, academic integrity, APA referencing and academic report writing, presentation skills, cross-cultural sensitivity and Human Rights in Canada. The course emphasizes self-awareness in a Canadian and university cultural context and the tools required to be successful. (4:0:0 for 7 weeks)

GCIB 508 (2) Effective Business Research and Communication

An examination of skills required for effective research and communication. Topics include research techniques for database and web search engines, evaluation of resources for quality and authority, referencing techniques and software, evaluation of communication channels, structure and preparation of written business reports, oral and video presentation skills. (4:0:0 for 7 weeks)

GCIB 530 (3) Financial Management for Decision Making

The essence of financial management is to determine how money should be spent, not how it has been spent. Topics include evaluation and analysis of financial statements, budgets, time value of money, working capital management, sources of financing, capital investment decisions, cost of capital, and other contemporary topics. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: GCIB 503, GCIB 504, and GCIB 505.

GCIB 560 (3) Influences on Consumer Behaviour

A study of the various influences affecting end consumers, industry and government buyers in the purchasing process. Topics include various decision-making models and the impact of psychological, sociological, economic and demographic factors, as well as their effect on market research design, data collection and interpretation. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: GCIB 502.

GCIB 590 (3) Managerial Economics

A detailed study of the economic models and statistical tools required for decision making involving scarce resources. Topics include demand, production, cost estimation, regression analysis, and the use of business and government data for forecasting. Credit will only be granted for one of MBA 504 or GCIB 590. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: GCIB 503 and GCIB 505.

GCIB 593 (3) Leadership and Management Skills

An exploration of leadership theories and concepts and their applications at all levels of an organization. Topics include trait and behavioural theory, adaptive leadership, psychodynamic approaches and the influence of neuroscience. (3:0:0)

Prerequisite: GCIB 501, GCIB 506, and GCIB 508.

GCIB 594 (3) Cost Management

An examination of the application of cost accounting methods to accurately monitor and ethically motivate financial performance. Topics include measuring and using financial decisions, assigning costs for internal and external reporting and strategic performance management. (3:0:0)
