PENG 100T Boilers, Boiler Systems, Codes and Standards

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections A3, A11, and A12. Topics include jurisdictional legislation; codes and standards; pressure vessels and piping for power engineers; boiler designs, components, and configuration; various boiler systems; fuel systems; combustion equipment; draft equipment; feedwater systems; and cleaning equipment. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 101T Elementary Mechanics and Dynamics

This course covers BCSA syllabus section A1. Topics include basic calculations involving forces and moments; simple machines; vectors; work; pressure; power; energy; friction; stress and strain; and power transmissions. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 102T Elementary Chemistry and Thermodynamics

This course covers BCSA syllabus section A2. Topics include basic chemistry principles; types of matter and their properties; principles and laws of thermodynamics; heat transfer modes and theory of operation of heat exchangers; and principles of thermodynamics of steam and their associated terms. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 103T Power/Heating Plant Safety and Environment

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections A4 and A5. Topics include general plant safety in power, heating, pressure and industrial plants; common safety programs; safe storage and handling of dangerous goods; fire safety; extinguishing methods and preventive measures for fires. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 104T Material, Welding, Piping, Valves, Energy Plant Controls and Instrumentation

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections A6, A7, and A9. Topics include mechanical properties of engineering materials; welding processes; inspection and testing methods of welds and materials; types of piping, piping connections, supports, and drainage devices; design and use of valves used in industry. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 105T Plant Communications

This course covers BCSA syllabus section A10. Topics include types of and proper use of plant communication systems; how to set up and complete plant and equipment sketches; and common types of diagrams used in plants industry. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 106T Electricity

This course covers BCSA syllabus section A8. Topics include basic electricity; AC and DC calculations using voltage, current, resistance and power; magnetism principles; designs and uses of electrical metering devices, AC and DC motors and generators; electrical transformers; and electrical distribution system. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 107T Prime Movers, Pumps and Compressors

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections B1, B2, and B7. Topics include principles of lubrication; bearings care and maintenance; the construction, operation, maintenance of steam turbines, cooling towers, condensers, gas turbines, internal combustion engines, and pumps. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 108T Power/Heating Plant Operation and Maintenance

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections B3, B4, and B5. Topics include the design of, operation of, and code requirements for pressure relief valves, combustion safety controls, and boiler fittings; boiler/plant startup, shutdown, monitoring, reporting, and cleaning. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 109T Water Treatment

This course covers BCSA syllabus section B6. Topics include general principles, methods, tests and equipment used in preparing raw feedwater for steam production in a boiler; internal boiler water treatment; condensate water treatment; tower/condenser water treatment; cooling water treatment; and heating system water treatment. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 110T Refrigeration and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections B9 and B10. Topics include refrigerants; operating principles; operational and safety controls of compression and adsorption refrigeration systems; and HVAC, including humidification, air movement, filters, duct systems, coils, and application. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 111T Auxiliary Building System, Heating and Cooling Systems

This course covers BCSA syllabus sections B8 and B11. Topics include the design consideration, components, operating principles, and maintenance of lighting, drainage, steam, hot water and infrared systems; combined types of HVAC systems; heat gain and losses; heat recovery methods; and HVAC control strategies. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

PENG 112T Types of Plants and Gas Processing Operation

This course covers BCSA syllabus section B12. Topics include various types of plants including pulp & paper, crude oil refining and upgrading, natural gas, SAGD/CSS, mining extraction, food production, and biomass; and main processes used in steel plants. Required for preparation for the inter-provincial exam and certification.

Prerequisite: Admission to the program.

PENG 120T Work Practicum

This course provides a controlled industrial work experience practicum. Students are required to complete 3 months (12 weeks, 480 hours) at an industrial plant where they will be exposed to all phases of power engineering activities. The practicum provides practical skills training in an industrial workplace, and is an opportunity to apply theory and skills learned in the classroom.

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; successful completion of all theory coursework (PENG 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106); and have written the BC Safety Authority Class 4 Power Engineering Exam - Part 'A' in the absence of this practicum course, BCSA requires six months of 4th class steam time for course equivalency.

PENG 130T Review and Exams

A review and integration of theory and skills learned throughout the program, and writing the BC Safety Authority Fourth Class Power Engineer examinations.

PENG 131T Power Engineering Review and Exams

A review and integration of theory and skills learned throughout the program, and writing the BC Safety Authority Fourth Class Power Engineer examinations.

Prerequisite: Admission to the program; successful completion of all theory coursework and work practicum.
